Num álbum com traços acústicos e a ouvir de preferência, pela primeira vez com o filme, num ambiente muito relaxante, o início de "Setting Forth" é um passo em falso na identificação do que se segue. A guitarra eléctrica faz a sua primeira de três aparições. Uma música que não se afasta muito do conceito de Pearl Jam, mas que dá o mote folk/blues de que o álbum está repleto, passando a mensagem da ligação à Natureza e distanciamento da sociedade, uma das principais, senão a principal mensagem do filme. A continuação é feita com "No Ceiling", uma pequena balada que introduz o ukelele ao álbum. Pequena, simples e eficaz, uma definição que é aplicada a esta música e que se estende ao álbum como um todo.
"Far Behind" é talvez a música que mais se adaptaria a Pearl Jam. Aliás, parece até saída do álbum homónimo lançado o ano passado. «Leaving all far behind», pelo seu tema talvez uma versão mais agitada de "Off He Goes".
O ukelele é a principal evidência de "Rise". Apenas este pequeno instrumento e a voz melódica servem de travão ao álbum, que de si já não ia muito rápido, transportando o ambiente deste para o de uma fogueira em plena praia debaixo de um céu escuro. Não mais o álbum larga esta atmosfera, adaptando-se assim muito bem ao filme de Sean Penn.
Ao trocar o ukelele por uma guitarra e fazendo uso do seu barítono grave, somos transportados para "Long Nights", numa entoação, sempre melódica, mas diferente de "Rise", «I am falling safely to the ground». Segue-se "Tuolumne", um pequeno, triste instrumental de guitarra que serve de abertura a "Hard Sun", uma «cover» com influências folk que incorpora, pela primeira vez, vozes femininas por detrás de Eddie. A primeira referência vocal à música nativa aparece também aqui, que invade por completo mais tarde em "The Wolf". Uma típica música de filme.
O início de "Society" faz lembrar "Soon Forget". Uma sonoridade igual faz da segunda «cover» deste álbum parecer mais um original de Pearl Jam. Uma música simples, muito melódica e triste em estilo country, em que Eddie excede-se. Uma fantástica interpretação e colocação do excelente barítono grave que definiu os Pearl Jam. Uma forte crítica social camuflada por entre a tristeza do abandono - «Hope you're not lonely without me».
"The Wolf" concentra-se nos sons mais nativos, distinguindo-se facilmente do som mais folk de todo o álbum. Os instrumentos de sopro são finalizados por gritos extasiantes de Eddie, em mais uma pequena peça de um minuto e meio. Uma pequena pausa do resto do álbum, por assim dizer, que é retomado em "End Of The Road", voltando o som eléctrico e a percussão que se haviam discretamente retirado depois de "Hard Sun", mas que não deixa de ser mais uma composição calma e relaxante, muito ao estilo de "Thumbing My Way".
O álbum finaliza com "Guaranteed", mais uma composição acústica, que é também a música principal de todo o filme, aparecendo sempre que lhe apetece e, no final então, completa. Mais uma interpretação vocal excelente a fechar o álbum, aparecendo também na mesma faixa (2 minutos depois do fim da versão normal) a versão recorrente no filme em que Eddie apenas coloca a melodia em «humming» (sem letra).
No todo, 7/10. Uma boa banda sonora. Filme recomenda-se também! Não comparar a um álbum de Pearl Jam. Não o é, não o tenciona ser.
