For the sake of simplification, take a spectrum with the "Gods" at either end; that is, put God Is An Astronaut on one side and Godspeed You! Black Emperor on the other. You'll find Long Distance Calling right in the middle, with an explosive rhythm section typical of the former and lengthy crescendos courtesy of the latter. But this is only a generality. Avoid the Light is a lot more complex than at face value, not only taking cues from art- and post-rock contemporaries, but also psychadelic and progressive German-rock forebears.

Though hailing from Germany, this five-piece doesn't merely regurgitate the motorik beat that has become synonymous with any dewy-eyed pastiche of the krautrock genre, expanding on its influence rather than repeating it. Hypnotic opener Apparitions sets the mood with bubbling ambience and sparkling guitars, hypnotically evolving over its twelve minutes - so far so post-rock – before erupting into spinning twin guitar riffery of the sort one can only imagine Mastodon tried to achieve with their latest. And those drums! They're up front in the mix, clean and in turn supportive or driving. And then there's the production - a job even Conny Plank would be proud of. When so many artists nowadays tout the influence of early ‘70s German underground as motive for their one-note, beeps and four-in-a-bar relaxed sleepy trance, it is refreshing to hear a band adopt and expand the sound, or the approach, in creating a work that, well, rocks.
Combine the fatback guitar tone of Eric Clapton during his Cream days with the slap-back rhythms of the delta, and you’ve got the spontaneous combustion that fires through the best of Hernando. After excursions into psychedelic jamming, this Mississippi trio returns to its roots, titling the CD after its hometown and drawing deeply from blues and early rock & roll. The results showcase the virtuosity of guitarist Luther Dickinson more prominently than ever, though drummer and brother Cody takes a vocal on "Mizzip," a celebration of good times in their home state, and bassist Chris Chew sings "I Would Love to Be a Hippy," where the borderline novelty lyrics contrast with the sweet subtlety of Luther’s guitar. Producer-pianist-patriarch Jim Dickinson lets the interplay develop organically. While the first four cuts bring out the band’s juke-joint best, the aptly titled "Long Way from Home," a harmony-laden ballad, shows that the Allstars still have fresh territory to explore. --Don McLeese

God Is An Astronaut are well known for their pounding tracks mixed with electronic themes, which are done amazingly well. This album doesn't stray from this formula. Their previous album, All Is Violent All Is Bright, for me, was a masterpiece. It had everything I wanted in an album, and still holds my favourite God Is An Astronaut song (Fragile). This album has 10 pounding songs, each heavier than God Is An Astronauts previous efforts. This album lasts an impressive hour, and you won't want to miss a minute of it. As before, this album is completely instrumental.
The songs on this album are extrordinary. They are done amazingly well and so professionally, and both genres of electronic and post rock mix as if they were meant to be that way in the first place. The album starts with "Shadows", which to me is an omen to a far heavier effort. It is one of their heaviest songs to date, but in making it so heavy, amazingly didn't lose the God Is An Astronaut atmosphere. Since to me, this band makes an amazing atmosphere.
Post mortem is extremely similar, heavy and pounding, but with moments of softer tones. The melody on this song, is stunning. Same with Shadows. Trully a masterpiece in Post Rock. Echoes is very similar, faster than the other songs. Then probably one of my favourites on the album, Snowfall. This song is amazing. It's quite sadder than other songs, and slightly longer than other songs. The melody is excellent, it's unbelievably well done, and the ending to the song just makes you want to play it again and again.
Now for a change. First Day Of Sun, it's utterly different. No drums, just guitars and synth. It is the most relaxing song i've heard in my life. Honestly, i'm not lying. An utter change, but a welcome change. Then then, No Return kicks in. This song is stunning. The elctronic side of this song is utterly superb, moreso than some other songs. And this trully is a great song. Then a complete change from the God Is An Astronaut norm, this song, Zodiac, is very wierd. It almost sounds indian at the start, you have to give this song a chance to shine. If you give it a chance, it will amaze you. Another relaxing song, Remaining Light then kicks in. I won't spoil anything, this song will surprise you completely. Now a similar song to Zodiac, which remains to me one of my favourites on the album, Shores of Orion. Absolutely excellent effort, an excellent song. And of course the album ends on an amazing note, with Loss.
I have no reason to give this album less than 5 stars. Simply because it's a masterpiece. Nothing more nothing less. Buy this album! It's the best post rock with electronic effort ever made. I said All Is Violent All Is Bright was a masterpiece, and this surpasses it. Though that album still holds my favourite song, this album is a better album as a whole. I highly recommend to the point of exploding.
Aqui fica uma malhazorra do album:
Alguem tinha pedido reviews aprofundadas?
piece: ja conheço God is an Astronaut.
Destas destaco sobretudo as "II) Apogee III) Requiem For The Lovers" e "Deus Ex Machina".

Agora a review.
Quote
Down in Austin, I ran into Parker from Radio Moscow and he said he was on his way to see The Pack AD. Since Parker has great taste in music, I filed that name away in the ol’ brain and, once back in Chicago, fell in love at first spin. The Pack AD are two Canadian chicks firing up dirty blues-punk mix. Sweet Jesus man, this was like a prayer being answered.
Funeral Mixtape gave me the same funny feeling that I had after hearing The Heartless Bastards for the first time. It’s like meeting a cute girl for the first time in junior high mixed with being run over by rusty ‘72 Ford pickup. The Pack AD consist of Becky Black on guitar/vocals and Maya Miller on drums. Black belts out lyrics like she’s trying to get poison out of her body and the unbridled fury and passion she delivers verse after verse is exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.
I was enjoying the disc just fine up until the third tune and that’s when it turned into lust. The blues boogie on “Making Gestures” digs straight down to the core of your being. Other standouts include “Shiny Things,” “Oh Be Joyful” and the delightfully slow, bluesy closer “Worried.” The ladies are on tour all over the US and Canada.
"Minsk’s ‘With Echoes…’ burns slow through twisted, psychedelic post-rock with equal parts bombast and deliberation. Minsk succeeds where other bands fail by marrying the range of human emotions with a vast sonic tapestry to create a provocative, stirring and supremely heavy album experience." -relapse
